Sounds

Sounds are essential for immersing players in your story.
Moiki allows you to add two types of sounds: loops and effects (or SFX).

Adding a sound

Popup for adding a sound.

Types of sounds

There are two types of sounds you can add to your project:

  • Loops: These are sounds that repeat indefinitely, creating a continuous ambiance throughout the sequence.
  • Effects (or SFX): These are short sounds that play only once, perfect for momentary actions like a thunderclap, a door slam, etc.

Via FreeSound

Moiki integrates sound search via FreeSound, a vast library of free sounds.

Icon search via FreeSound.

When adding a sound via FreeSound, you have several options to refine your search.

You can choose the sound duration from the following categories: very short (less than 2 seconds), short (between 2 and 5 seconds), medium (between 5 and 10 seconds), and long (between 10 and 20 seconds).
If you opt for a loop, the minimum duration must be 20 seconds.

Upload

If you want to use your own sounds, you can upload them directly from your device. The sound files must be a maximum of 5 MB in size, and the accepted formats are .mp3 and .webm.

Licenses & credits

Just like other media, sounds have a license and credits.

For sounds from FreeSound, licenses vary depending on the files. Commercial use is sometimes prohibited and a mention in the credits may be required. Note: The story reader automatically integrates credits for sounds from FreeSound.

For icons you add yourself, make sure to properly fill out the credit information and verify you have the right to use them.

To learn more about licenses, please refer to the chapter on exports.

Using a sound

Once you have added your sounds, you can integrate them into your story in different ways.

In sequences

You can associate a sound with a sequence to enrich the narrative experience.

Adding sounds in a sequence.

For each sequence, it is possible to add:

  • A loop: A repetitive sound that plays continuously in the background.
  • An effect (SFX): A short sound that plays only once to accentuate an action.
note

However, there are exceptions to these rules: it is not possible to add a sound effect to the first sequence, and loops cannot be used in the ending sequences.

In themes

Sounds can also be used in themes to customize the overall experience.

Adding sounds in a theme.

  • For click sounds or gain/loss of items (or heroes), you can add a unique effect (SFX).

  • For ending sequences, whether happy or tragic, you can choose a sound to be played once. This sound can be either a loop or an effect, depending on the ambiance you wish to create.
